Full-Day Every-Day Kindergarten: Considerations for Policymakers

In summer 2006, the Minneapolis Foundation announced a focus on promoting universal Full Day, Every Day Kindergarten (FDED-K) in Minnesota as a strategy for closing the achievement gap. In the context of broad interest in early learning and achievement gap issues, FDED-K has been embraced in various forms by various political groups. DFLers in both houses picked up on universal FDED-K as important and doable. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and GOP legislators support the idea of targeted, not universal, FDED-K.

The study reported on what services are needed to support the mental health of infants/toddlers in Minnesota communities, which of these supports are currently available, and what the state's role can and should be in fostering the development of services that are needed.

Measuring Up

Four Child Care Resource and Referral programs in Minnesota and faculty from the University of Minnesota asked themselves this question. They decided to take a close look at child care in four representative counties to learn more. Measuring Up is their report.
