Celebrate Books!
Book Week 2008
Featured speaker: Joyce Sidman
October 14 - October 16, 2008

Joyce Sidman

That Joyce Sidman is someone who loves to “poke around outside,”
pondering the significance of all she observes near Maine or
Minnesota ponds and meadows, is evident in the poems she writes in
books such as Caldecott Honor Award winner Song of the Water
Boatman or Butterfly Eyes. That Joyce loves dogs is
evident in books like The World According to Dog or Meow
Ruff. That Joyce knows children’s interests, concerns and
desires is evident in This is Just to Say, in poems written
so convincingly in the voices of 6th. grade students that readers
believe they – and not Joyce – have actually written them. But most
of all when reading her seven published books, it is evident that
Joyce loves words and uses them especially skillfully in creating
images and metaphors that sing.
Book Week is supported by the Department of Curriculum and
Instruction of the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD),
University of Minnesota; by the generous contributions of Ms. Ruth
Mitchell and other CEHD alumni; The Red Balloon Bookshop; and by the
