Approved content area courses for the parent and family education licensure program

General requirements

The state of Minnesota established coursework requirements for those who wish to be licensed as parent and family educators. The University of Minnesota's coursework as outlined below meets those requirements. In addition to the specific courses, license applicants must hold a completed baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university before a license can be issued.

Family Education (FE) course number changes (FE to CI)

Credits listed are in semester hours. The parent education courses and parent education practicum are offered in sequence beginning in June of each year. If you wish to apply coursework to a graduate degree, take 4000 level or higher offerings.

Parent education — online courses (9 cr minimum)

  • CI 5932—Introduction to Parent Education (1 cr)
  • CI 5943—Parent Learning and Development: Implications for Parent Education (2 cr)
  • CI 5944—Parent Education Curriculum (2 cr)
  • CI 5945—Teaching and Learning in Parent Education (2 cr)
  • CI 5946—Assessment and Evaluation in Parent Education (2 cr)

Parent education practicum — online course (2 cr minimum)

  • CI 5949—Student Teaching in Parent Education (2 cr)
    Arrange for the practicum three months in advance (call 612-624-1294 to obtain information).
  • Note: CI 5943 and CI 5944 must be completed before you can enroll in CI 5949—Student Teaching. You may be enrolled in CI 5945 and CI 5946 concurrently with CI 5949.
  • Note: All but CI 5932 and CI 5942 must be taken in sequence.

Family development (1 course with 2 cr minimum)

  • CI 5942—Everyday Experiences of Families (2 cr – online) (recommended course)
  • FSOS 1101—Intimate Relationships (3 cr)
  • FSOS 3102—Family Systems and Diversity (3 cr)
  • FSOS 3104—Global and Diverse Families (3 cr)
  • FSOS 4104—Family Psychology (3 cr)
  • FSOS 5032—Family Systems Theories & Interventions (3 cr)

Parent-child relationships (1 course with 3 cr minimum)

  • CI 5937—Parent-Child Interaction (3 cr)
  • FSOS 4155—Parent-Child Relationships (3 cr)

Child development (2 courses with 6 cr minimum)
(courses other than those already listed must focus on birth - 5 year development)

  • CPSY 4302—Infant Development (4 cr) (recommended course)
  • CPSY 4331—Social and Personality Development (4 cr) (recommended course)
  • CPSY 4343—Cognitive Development (4 cr)
  • CPSY 4336—Development and Interpersonal Relationships (4 cr)
  • CPSY 2301—Intro Child Psychology (4 cr)
    or
    CPSY 3301—Intro Child Psych for Social Sciences (4 cr)

Other requirements for the Minnesota teaching license

If you want to obtain a Minnesota teaching license, the following are required by the state.

Human relations (4 cr minimum)

  • EPSY 5135—Human Relations Workshop (4 cr)

Drug education (1 cr minimum)

  • PUBH 6003—Fundamentals of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (1 cr - online)

ExamPraxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessments (PPST®)

If you already hold a Minnesota teaching license, or you are not interested in a Minnesota teaching license, EPSY 5135, PUBH 6003, and the Praxis exam are not required.
