Interdisciplinary focus

Accredited by NCATE

If you are a licensed teacher interested in teaching at the middle school level, this area of study is ideal. You are encouraged to pursue coursework in a number of different areas to develop instructional competency in a variety of subjects. For students working toward an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction, particularly those interested in middle school, we offer the option of taking subject-matter specific methods courses from a range of different disciplinary areas rather than taking methods courses exclusively in one area. You will study with faculty who have national reputations in such areas as literacy, math, adolescent literature, environmental sciences, adolescent development, and cooperative learning. The program also emphasizes extensive field experience in classrooms.

Second languages and cultures education

  • Diane Tedick
My primary research interest focuses on the pedagogy required for the successful integration of language and content instruction, particularly in language immersion contexts, where a world or indigenous language (e.g., French, Spanish, Yup'ik) is used as the vehicle for teaching academic subject matter.

Social studies education

  • Patricia Avery
I currently coordinate the evaluation of the Deliberating in a Democracy Project, a study in which models for discussing controversial public issues are implemented in secondary classrooms in three U.S. cities (Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.), and three countries (Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, and Lithuania). 2004-2005 is the first year of this five-year project; each year, the project will be expanded to additional sites within and outside the United States.
