C&I policy for the use of Grad 999 to maintain active status
May 19, 2005
Effective fall 2002, ALL Graduate School students are required
to register in the Graduate School every fall and every spring term
in order to maintain active status.
Maintaining active status is critical and is required in order
to participate in the University community as a Graduate School
student. Participating in the University community includes registering
for coursework, taking examinations, submitting milestone forms,
or filing for graduation. Students not registered every fall and
every spring term are considered to have withdrawn; their Graduate
School records are deactivated.* Those who wish to resume graduate
work must request readmission to the Graduate School (and if readmitted,
must register) to reactivate their status.
Effective fall 2002, Grad 999 — a zero-credit, zero-fee,
non-graded registration option — became an option for those Graduate
School students who must register solely to meet the Graduate School's
registration requirement. (Check the One Stop course schedule
for the registration number—use Graduate School as the subject.)
Effective Fall Semester 2005, the Department of Curriculum
and Instruction will allow students to register for GRAD 999 a maximum
of two times. Any use beyond this maximum requires adviser and Director
of Graduate Studies (DGS) approval. Students should also justify
their use of Grad 999 on their annual progress reports. The department
has outlined the following as possible legitimate reasons for using
Grad 999 beyond the maximum allowances:
- A student’s coursework is complete and s/he is working on
completing preliminary exams (students without assistantships
or financial aid only); if holding an assistantship or receiving
financial aid, students should use CI 8666;
- A student has completed all credits, including thesis credits,
but has not yet finished the thesis;
- A student has extraordinary family circumstances or personal
health reasons;
- A student has serious extenuating circumstances for professional
development (e.g., an overseas opportunity).
Although there may be other acceptable exceptions to this policy,
these should be negotiated ahead of time with both the adviser and
DGS.
For more information on Grad 999, and additional considerations,
please see
Maintaining Active Status.
* Summer registration does not count toward this registration
requirement, nor are students required to register during the summer
session.
