Administration and management of programs

Governance

The Department Chair is responsible for leadership of the department and management of resources. The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) chairs the Graduate Studies Committee and represents the department’s graduate programs to the University’s Graduate School. S/he coordinates the administration of the department’s graduate programs and communicates and enforces the regulations of the Graduate School and degree programs as well as opportunities offered by the Graduate School (e.g., fellowship competitions).

Graduate studies committee

Chaired by the DGS, the Graduate Studies Committee includes four additional C&I faculty members who are elected by the faculty. Each serves a three-year term. Two students also serve as members for 1- or 2-year terms. The committee reviews Ph.D. programs and requests for travel and research support. It also initiates departmental fellowship competitions, makes recommendations to the faculty regarding graduate study policies within the department, and engages in reviews of continued membership on the graduate faculty as needed (see policy). The committee meets monthly during the academic year.
