Freshmen: During your first year
During your first year you are probably asking yourself many questions regarding your future career.
- What major should I choose?
- What courses should I enroll in?
- How do I find out what I want to do with my life?
At the University of Minnesota in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) there are numerous resources available to help you with these questions.
A checklist for first year students
- Become familiar with the student services offered in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).
- Visit the ETC Services center room 127 in Appleby Hall and explore its resources.
- Get involved! Join a student organization.
- Learn about the majors offered in the College and explore all the U of M majors.
- Enroll in various courses to explore majors.
- Take the Orientation to Self and Career course (PSTL 1076)
- Begin self-assessment and identifying majors/careers through career counseling. Start by visiting the ETC Services center in 127 Appleby Hall or schedule an appointment with a career counselor.
- Begin identifying your interests, skills, and values by logging onto Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS), a computerized career guidance system or schedule an appointment with a career counselor.
- Find professionally-oriented part-time, summer or student employment.
- Engage in volunteer activities and service learning.
- Being exploring international opportunities and consider a global seminar.
- Learn more about careers by engaging in occupational research.
