Curriculum for higher education tracks

Below are the curricula for the following:

M.A. program
Ph.D. program
Ed.D.

M.A. track in higher education

Program core (12 or more semester credits):

  • EDPA 5701—U.S. Higher Education (3 cr)

Plus 9 additional semester credits, including at least 6 selected from:

  • EDPA 5001—Formal Organizations in Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8702—Administration & Leadership in Higher Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA 5704—College Students Today (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8703—Public Policy in Higher Education (3 cr)

Related field (6 or more semester credits):

The master’s degree requires 6 semester credits taken outside the department that directly relate to the student’s area of study. These courses should be selected in consultation with the adviser and should constitute a solid course work foundation for the student’s Plan B paper.

Methodology (6 or more semester credits):

  • EDPA 5501—Principles and Methods of Evaluation (3 cr)
  • Additional research methodology course to be identified with adviser.

Electives (to be determined with adviser; used to reach required total of 30 credits)

Plan B paper (master’s paper) (2-4 semester credits):

  • EDPA 5795—Plan B Research Design (2-3 cr)

Ph.D. track in higher education:

Departmental core (10 semester credits):

The departmental core is a set of prescribed courses that provides all Ph.D. students in the Department of Educational Policy and Administration with a common base of knowledge. Students are expected to complete these courses (except 8015) during their first year of graduate study.

  • EDPA 5001—Formal Organizations in Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8011—Doctoral Research Seminar (1 cr)
  • EDPA 8015—Research Design and Ed. Policy (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8302—Educational Policy Perspectives (3 cr)

Program core (18 or more semester credits):

The program core is a set of courses prescribed by the program emphasis. Students are expected to complete the program core within the first two years of full-time graduate study or within the first three years of part-time study.

  • EDPA 5701—U.S. Higher Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA 5704—College Students Today (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8702—Administration and Leadership in Higher Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA 8703—Public Policy in Higher Education (3 cr)
  • EDPA electives (must be in higher education) (9 cr)

Methodology courses (12 or more semester credits):

Coursework in methodology provides students with the analytical techniques and skills necessary for disciplined inquiry and policy analysis. Methodology courses are usually selected from statistics, measurement and evaluation, research methods, computer analysis of data, psychometrics, and econometrics. All students are required to have some background or course work in statistics.

  • EDPA 5501—Principles and Methods of Evaluation (3 cr)

In addition, all students are required to have coursework in statistics through multiple regression. Courses are selected in consultation with adviser.

Supporting program or minor field of study (12 or more semester credits):

The supporting program or minor field of study provides in-depth coursework in other departments that directly supports the dissertation area. In addition, this coursework is used by the student to focus on individual interests and professional goals.

Thesis credits (24 semester credits):

All students are required to register for EDPA 8888 for 24 semester credits after completing the preliminary oral examination.

Ed.D. track in higher education

Program core

EDPA 5701—U.S. Higher Education (3 cr)
Presents historical and contemporary perspectives on higher education in the United States, with emphasis on the structure, history, and purposes of the higher education system as a whole.

EDPA 5001—Formal Organizations in Education (3 cr)
Presents classical and contemporary theories of organizations and their applications in higher education and related fields.

EDPA 5704—College Students Today (3 cr)
Focuses on college student development, curricular and extracurricular activities, and student-faculty interaction in colleges and universities.

EDPA 8703—Public Policy in Higher Education (3 cr)
Presents theories, analytic methods, and critical issues in higher education at the state and national levels. Issues include equality of educational opportunity and access, affirmative action, system-wide governance and coordination, research funding, student financial aid, and public accountability.

EDPA 8702—Administration and Leadership in Higher Education (3 cr)
Examines issues of leadership, governance, and administration in higher education through theoretical perspectives and practical analysis. Topics include planning, change, decision making, organizational culture, budgeting, and conflict management.

Fall and spring classes will meet on Friday and Saturday, approximately once a month. Summer courses will be offered each year in an intensive, two-week session near the end of June.

All classes will be held on the Duluth and Twin Cities campuses of the University of Minnesota.

Other courses will be chosen based on the common interests of members of the cohort. The following list is illustrative of previous courses chosen:

Methodology courses

Students will complete graduate-level courses in statistical methods, qualitative methods, and principles and methods of evaluation.

Seminar

The Ed.D. cohort program in higher education includes an ongoing seminar that provides a forum for discussion of research topics and methods and gives attention to critical issues in higher education. It also provides students with guidance in preparing for their doctoral examinations and doctoral research projects, as well as enhancing their career development.

Additional credits

A set of 12 credits constituting a supporting program and 24 thesis credits are included in the doctoral program. Up to 12 credits may be transferred in from a masters program.

EDPA 8121—Doctoral Seminar: for International Educators (4-5 cr)

The Ed.D. for international educators program is intended for full-time professionals and those aspiring to be leaders in the field. Courses are offered during a three-week summer session at the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus. During years 1-3, fall and spring semester required courses will be offered via the Internet.

Research Methods Courses

Students will complete graduate-level courses in statistical methods, qualitative methods, and principles and methods of evaluation.

Seminar

The Ed.D. cohort program for international educators includes an ongoing seminar (EDPA 8121) that provides a forum for discussion of possible applied dissertation thesis topics and methods. It also provides students with guidance in preparing for their doctoral examinations.

Additional credits

A set of 18 credits constituting a supporting program may be transferred into the program from a previously awarded Master's Degree. 24 thesis credits are included in the doctoral program.

Advising

The faculty co-directors of the program typically serve as advisors to provide information and guidance until the student has completed two semesters of course work and is ready to file their doctoral program with the Graduate School. At this point, a faculty dissertation advisor is selected, and the student and advisor work closely together during the process for completing the dissertation.
