I attended a two-year college, earned an
undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics from Carleton College,
and then earned my Ph.D. in administration from the University of
Chicago. For the last ten years, my interest has primarily been in the
design of two-year college structures and the growing phenomena of
community colleges as engines of social-economic development. This
perspective requires continual redesign of programs and delivery
systems that can only be addressed by a mix of qualitative and
quantitative methodologies. I am currently writing a design manual for
the Minnesota state colleges and university system (MnSCU), and I also
do some private work with corporations on quality control and
management systems. Additionally, I’m co-director of the Leadership Academy,
the only program in the Midwest geared toward preparing faculty
leaders for two-year colleges. During the past decade, more than 70
Leadership Academy graduates have joined community colleges around the
region, making the University a major source of influence in this
important educational arena. This year’s group will include a
significant number of students from the region’s increasingly
high-profile Tribal Colleges. My connection to my field is primarily
through my students. I’ve had a long academic career, but I am proud
to define myself by my students, not by my publications. They are a
continuing source of inspiration to me. Education
