After 27 years as a public school teacher and administrator, I
was drawn into the academy by my desire to spend life as a focused
learner. The professorship requires non-stop attention to knowledge
acquisition and production and, therefore, meets this personal need.
In other words, the role places me in an explicit and active
learning community.
My interests center on ontologically-held conceptions of power,
constructions of identity, and the dynamics they create during
decision making. Through ethnographic and other qualitative methods,
both traditional and non-traditional, I study superintendents and
other administrators through a lens informed by various theoretical
perspectives including ones advancing social justice.
