The main theme of the work I’ve done and continue to do involves student and faculty issues in higher education. My particular interest is in examining college students and faculty from the perspective of differential psychology. What motivates an individual to attend college? What institutional characteristics and services help one to become academically successful? The model I most ascribe to might be called a matching model, which theorizes that an individual needs information in order to make a good choice. My focus is much more quantitative than qualitative, but I’m comfortable with both approaches.

I originally intended to be a high school math teacher, but went on to complete my Ph.D. in psychology. I bring two decades of involvement in studies on retention and graduation rates, institutional accreditation, academic program review and approval, and program evaluation in higher education to my faculty role. I enjoy helping institutions better understand students and faculty, which facilitates academic success and satisfaction. I also spent two years chairing the steering committee that developed ISEEK (Internet System for Education and Employment Knowledge), an innovative program funded initially by the Minnesota State Legislature.

I enjoy working individually with students on the design and implementation of research projects. If it’s your first time doing empirical research, how do you know what to expect? As an advisor, I try to help students experience the intriguing aspects of conducting research, so it’s not just a one-time experience. The journey is as important as the destination.
