Visiting scholar program

Each year the Department of Educational Policy and Administration hosts a limited number of visiting scholars whose goals for the designated period are consistent with the mission and available resources of the department and University.

A match of interests between visiting scholars and the department contributes to the richness of the experience for visitors as well as valuable contributions to the intellectual life of the department. The Department of Educational Policy and Administration accepts only visiting scholars with a completed doctorate. Visiting scholars do not hold academic appointments. The invitation to be a visiting scholar carries limited rights and privileges described below (for more details see Resources for visiting scholars).

Visiting scholars

  • may visit the department for up to one year

  • have a courtesy designation that does not signify a formal association, e.g., visiting scholars may not claim a University affiliation for the purpose of applying for grants/contracts, and should not represent themselves in their publications and correspondence as having a University affiliation

  • are given free reading and borrowing privileges in the University libraries

  • may purchase photocopying services at University libraries

  • have access to housing information

  • have access to computer labs and may purchase copying privileges in labs upon payment of fees

  • may use the services of the International Scholar and Student Services Office with some administrative fees

  • may attend courses on a non-credit basis with instructor approval

  • are assigned a shared office space (if available) with telephone, computer, and printer

  • receive limited access to fax

  • have access to digital sender

  • may use the University recreational facilities upon payment of a fee

Note: Budget and staffing limitations prevent access to the following services: copying on department machines, long distance telephone calls, and secretarial or graduate student assistance. Personal assistance in locating housing or placing children in area schools may be provided by the department faculty associate, depending on his/her availability at the time of arrival.

Below are the eligibility guidelines for the visitor

  • must be fully funded with resources outside the University of Minnesota; visitor must assume financial responsibility for visa administrative fees of the University International Student and Scholar Services (if international scholar) and responsibility for arranging their own financial support (including duplication costs) and benefits (including health insurance for visitor and any accompanying family members) for the duration of the stay. All visiting scholars and their dependents are required to enroll in the Student Health Benefit Plan unless they are covered by another U.S.-based, employer sponsored health plan (contact studins@bhs.umn.edu for more information)

  • must have a department faculty member associate; this person agrees to provide guidance on the chosen research project

  • must have obtained a leave from the home institution

  • must have applied by the deadlines of April 1 for the following spring semester arrival and November 1 for the following fall semester arrival (see application below)

  • must arrive at least 3 weeks, but no more than one month, before the beginning of classes for the semester (housing cannot be arranged prior to arrival since there is no on-campus housing available)

  • must limit stay to a maximum of one year

  • will sign an agreement regarding intellectual property

  • must have completed application with requested documents (see application form)
