Learning and cognition – Ph.D. curriculum

  1. Learning and cognition core requirements (min. 6 credits)
    You must take the following courses:

    EPSY 8117—Writing Empirical Papers and Research/Grant Proposals in Education and Psychology, 3 cr.

    Choice of either (not both):
    EPSY 5114—Psychology of Student Learning, 3 cr.
    Or
    EPSY 5115—Psychology of Adult Learning, 3 cr.
     
  2. Required learning and cognition courses (min. 12 credits)
    You must take some combination of the following courses:

    EPSY 5101—Intelligence and Creativity, 3 cr.

    EPSY 5112—Knowing, Learning, and Thinking, 4 cr.

    EPSY 5113—Psychology of Instruction and Technology, 3 cr.

    EPSY 5118 – Language: Psycholinguistic Research and Educational Application, 3 cr.

    EPSY 5191—Education of the Gifted and Talented, 3 cr.
     
  3. Specialization courses in learning and cognition (min. 6 credits)
    You must take some combination of the following courses:

    EPSY 8111—Seminar: Human Expertise and its Development, 3 cr.

    EPSY 8114—Seminar: Cognition and Learning, 3 cr.

    EPSY 8115—Psychology of Instruction and Technology, 3 cr.

    EPSY 8116—Reading for Meaning: Cognitive Processes in the Comprehension of Texts, 3 cr.
     
  4. Departmental core course requirements

    3 credits of issues in educational psychology:
    You must take the following course:
    EPSY 8905—History and Systems of Psychology: Landmark Issues in Educational Psychology, 3 cr.

    6 credits of research methods:
    You must take the following courses:
    EPSY 5216—Introduction to Research in Educational Psychology, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8216—Seminar: Research Processes in Psychological Foundations of Education, 3 cr.

    3 credits of social psychology or personality courses:
    You must take one of the following courses:
    EPSY 5151—Cooperative Learning, 3 cr.
    EPSY 5155—Group Dynamics and Social Influence, 3 cr.
    PSY 5135—Psychology of Individual Differences, 3 cr.
    PSY 5202—Attitudes and Social Behavior, 3 cr.
    PSY 5205—Applied Social Psychology, 3 cr.
    PSY 5207—Personality and Social Behavior, 3 cr.
    PSY 8201—Social Cognition, 3 cr.
    CPSY 8302—Developmental Psychology: Social and Emotional Processes, 4 cr.

    12 credits of statistics AND measurement courses:
    You must take at least four of the following courses: (6 credits must be at 8XXX level; 3 credits must be in measurement area)

    Statistics:
    EPSY 8261—Statistical Methods I: Probability and Inference, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8262—Statistical Methods II: Regression and the General Linear Model, 3 cr.
    Specialized:
    EPSY 8263—Design and Analysis of Experiments, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8264—Advanced Multiple Regression Analysis, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8266—Statistical Analysis Using Structural Equation Methods, 3 cr.

    Measurement:
    EPSY 5221—Basic Principles of Educational Measurement, 4 cr.
    PSY 5862—Psychological Measurement: Theory and Methods, 3 cr.
    Specialized:
    EPSY 5614—Foundations of Special Education II, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8221—Psychological Scaling, 3 cr.
    EPSY 8222—Advanced Measurement: Theory and Application, 4 cr.
    PSY 5865—Advanced Psychological and Educational Measurement, 3 cr.
     
  5. Graduate School requirements

    Minor or supporting/related fields (minimum 12 credits – check with your adviser for consultation/permission concerning this requirement):
    You must complete a minimum of 12 credits of coursework outside the Educational Psychology department (if selecting a minor, check with intended minor department for credit and course requirements).

Dissertation


EPSY 8888—Thesis Credits: Doctoral, 24 credits (check with advisor)

Total minimum credits required for Ph.D.: 84 credits
