Admission to the licensure/master of education (M.Ed.) program in special education

The licensure/M.Ed. (also referenced as M.Ed./professional studies) program offers specializations in deaf/hard of hearing, developmental disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and learning disabilities. The steps to admission are below.

1. Obtain application forms

  1. You may obtain an application packet from the Student Services office of the Department of Educational Psychology or from the special education programs office.

    OR
  2. Download the application materials from the links on the checklist below.

    Please note: the master of education program is offered through the Department of Educational Psychology AND the College of Education and Human Development, NOT the Graduate School.

2. Fill out the application forms, and gather or prepare the other required application materials (all on checklist below).

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

Application checklist

____ The Application for Admission to M.Ed./Professional Studies Programs [.pdf] or Application for Admission to Additional Licensure Programs [.pdf] (must have a current Minnesota classroom teaching license to apply for the additional licensure program)

____ The special education application form

____ Official transcripts from all collegiate institutions attended (have college(s) send, or you may send the sealed envelope containing the transcripts.) University of Minnesota graduates need not submit University of Minnesota transcripts to Student Services.

____ 1-2 page applicant statement outlining goals, interests, experiences, etc.

____ Résumé

____ 2 letters of recommendation [.pdf], preferably from individuals in the education field

____ PPST/PRAXIS I Scores* (for information see Praxis tests)

____ Application fee ($55 payable by check, money order or bank draft to University of Minnesota).

NOTES:
* Learning disabilities and developmental disabilities students also MUST submit the LD/DD addendum.

*PPST/PRAXIS I scores are not a requirement at time of admission to this program, but are required by the time of your INITIAL registration to prevent a hold being placed on your records.
