The M.A. program

Announcement regarding recreation, park, and leisure studies graduate programs

The School of Kinesiology, in consultation with the College of Education and Human Development, is currently suspending admissions to the M.A. program in Recreation, Park, and Leisure Studies and the Ph.D. program in Education-Recreation, Park, and Leisure Studies. No applications for Fall 2009 will be accepted for these programs.

Master of arts (M.A.) degree is an advanced degree program administered by the Graduate School. The M.A. degree in recreation, park, and leisure studies is designed to provide advanced study and research in: (a) the administration and management of leisure service delivery systems, or (b) the planning and development of leisure services, or (c) the phenomena of leisure and leisure behavior.  Students may apply for admission to the master of arts program for any semester of the academic year. However, admission for the fall semester is preferred because of course scheduling sequences. Areas of emphasis are available in topical areas.

Plan A and Plan B:
Recreation, park, and leisure studies M.A. students specialize in park and recreation administration, outdoor recreation/education, and sport management.

Degree requirements:
The M.A. is offered under Plan A and Plan B.  Plan A requires 30 credits, including at least 14 credits in Recreation, Park, and Leisure Studies (REC), 6 credits in a minor or related field, and 10 thesis credits (REC 8xxx). Plan B also requires 30 credits, including at least 14 credits in Recreation, Park, and Leisure Studies, 6 credits in a minor or related field, 4 credits of a research project (REC 8xxx), and 6 additional credits in any of these areas.  For both the Plan A and Plan B, students must take REC 5981 (3 credits), REC 8980 (1 credit), and in the related field or minor. A 3.00 minimum GPA is required to maintain good standing and to graduate.

Students earning an M.A. in recreation, park, and leisure studies may select specific program emphasis from among the following.

Language requirements: None.

Final exam: The final exam is oral.

Minor requirements for students majoring in other fields:
A master's minor requires at least 6 credits of graduate-level Recreation, Park, and Leisure Studies courses.
