M.A. in kinesiology sample program with an emphasis in sport sociology

Required program: 30 credits minimum

GPA: A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 is required to maintain good standing and to graduate

Major:
A minimum of 14 semester course credits with KIN prefix (not including KIN 8777 or KIN 8995)

Required courses:

  • KIN 5981—Research Methodology in Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport, 3 cr.
  • KIN 8980—Graduate Research Seminar in Kinesiology, 2-6 cr.

One of the following research options:

  • KIN 8777—Thesis Credits: Masters (PLAN A), 10 cr.
  • or
  • KIN 8995—Research Problems in Kinesiology (PLAN B), 4 cr.

Recommended courses:

  • KIN 5136—Psychology of Coaching, 3 cr.
  • EPSY 5151—Cooperative Learning, 3 cr.
  • KIN 5171—Foundations of Kinesiology, 3 cr.
  • KIN 5371—Sport and Society, 3 cr.
  • KIN 5511—Women in Sport and Leisure, 3 cr.

Minor or related field:
A minimum of 6 semester credits in one or more related fields (not KIN prefix)

Required courses: A minimum of 3 semester credits in statistical methods

  • EPSY 5261—Introductory Statistical Methods, 3 cr.
  • or
  • EPSY 8261—Statistical Methods I: Probability and Inference, 3 cr.

Recommended courses:

  • EPSY 5041—Sociology of Education, 3 cr.
  • EDPA 5101—International Education and Development, 3 cr.
  • EDPA 5303—Managing in the Learning Organization, 3 cr.
  • KIN 5725—Organization and Management of Physical Education and Sport, 3 cr.
  • KIN 5801—Legal Aspects of Sport and Recreation, 4 cr.

Elective courses in both the major and the minor or supporting program will be selected by the student and the adviser, subject to the adviser’s approval. These will be selected according to the student’s prior academic background and future academic and career goals. Access to graduate level courses in minor or supporting programs may be limited by prerequisites and demand.
