Undergraduate honors program
in the School of Kinesiology
Join a distinctive community
of advanced scholars by becoming part of the undergraduate kinesiology
honors program in the School of Kinesiology.
If you are chosen for the honors program you:
- will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors, to
prepare rigorously for professional programs and graduate school, and
to pursue special research projects.
- will team together with graduate students and faculty to provide
leadership within the program.
- will enjoy special services and social opportunities.
- will graduate with one of the traditional honors designations: cum
laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude. Such designations will be
an impressive addition to applications for further education and for
employment opportunities.
The nucleus of the program is directed research in the physical
activities sciences, designed to provide the most significant and
challenging experience the faculty can offer to undergraduates. A goal
for participants will be to complete research that warrants publication
in a professional journal.
In addition, the kinesiology honors seminar (two semesters) will
provide exposure to the breadth of inquiry in the kinesiology sciences
and provide honors students with the opportunity to become acquainted
with one another. The honors experience culminates with the
undergraduate research symposium and honors dinner. Requirements for completion
-
at least 40 credits in upper-division courses
(3xxx and 5xxx) at the University’s Twin Cities campus
-
two semesters (six credits) of directed
research (KIN 3993-honors section) the results of which will be
reported in an acceptable honors thesis
-
two kinesiology honors seminars (KIN 4001H)
one of which must be completed during fall semester of the junior year
and the other during spring semester of the senior year in residence
-
one additional honors opportunity selected
from the following:
-
an additional semester (two credits) of
participation in directed research
-
an upper division honors course (5xxx
designated by an H)
-
an 8xxx-level course (seniors only; requires
instructor permission)
-
the last 60 credits of A-F registration with
a minimum GPA of:
-
cum laude,
minimum GPA 3.50
-
magna cum laude, minimum GPA 3.66
-
summa cum laude, minimum GPA 3.75
Grades of F and N, which carry no grade
points, are included in the computation of the GPA. If a portion of the
last 60 credits completed has been transferred from another institution,
the proportion of residence credits with grades of A must equal the
proportion of transfer credits with grades of A. Admission

Development, School of Kinesiology. A minimum
of three semesters of honors registration is required for graduation
