Emotional intelligence and a systems approach to leadership:
“The Big Picture”

Facilitator: Bernie Saunders, educational consultant

Bernie SaundersMany leadership experts worldwide conclude that Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the barometer of excellence on virtually any job. School district leaders have been using EI to broaden their leadership capacity, improve school climate and increase student achievement, and reduce risk behaviors. Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, leading researchers on emotional intelligence, define emotional intelligence as, “the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions” (1990).

This workshop will provide participants with opportunities to explore their emotional intelligence and skills for incorporating EI into their leadership style. Participants will also learn “Big Picture” theory in approaching leadership for systemic improvement.

Bernie Saunders is recognized nationally for his pioneering work in the areas of Integrative/Accelerated Learning, the development of learning communities, and the use of creative expression as a catalyst for achieving greater leadership and collaborative results and effective change.

The co-author of the internationally acclaimed book, Ten Steps to a Learning Organization, Bernie has published numerous articles such as, Talents: It’s Never Too Late, and How To Get The Whole Staff Thinking and has been featured in such magazines as, Carlson Learning Journal, Executive Excellence, and Executive Female. He is the author of the personal development program Boundless Renewal: The Power of Reflection. His newly released publication, The Grace of Ordinary Days: An Invitation to Celebrate Life’s Journey, is co-authored with his poet mother, Kay Saunders.

Having worked with clients that have ranged from Fortune 50 companies and foundations to small manufacturers and health care providers, Bernie’s focus for thirty years has been to guide individuals, teams, and leaders in achieving their personal and organizational desired vision and outcomes.

Bernie has a degree in business management from St. Joseph’s College, and a masters in applied theology from the Berkeley Graduate Theological Union. He received his Integrative Learning Masters Training at the Lozonov Institute. Bernie is certified in the emotional intelligence assessment tool, BarOn EQ-i, and is a licensed member of the EQ Network. He is a clinical faculty member at the Centre for Applied Leadership, and teaches leadership programs at The College of St. Catherine.
