School of Social Work

Dual Degrees

The School of Social Work collaborates with other U of M units to offer several dual masters degree programs. Students generally take course work exclusively in each department for the first two years (one year in social work and one year in the other department), and in the third year take courses concurrently in both departments, facilitating the integration of content from both fields. Some credits taken in the dual degree programs are applied toward both degrees, and typically require three years of full-time study.

Applicants to a dual degree program apply separately to the School of Social Work and to the other graduate program from which the other degree is sought, fulfilling application requirements for each department. Each program in the dual degree uses its own admissions standards and assesses students independently. We encourage students to apply to both programs before beginning their studies, although students may apply to the second program during their first year of study in the Full Program in Social Work.

Students may also pursue the M.S.W. concurrently with another graduate program that is not a formal dual degree program provided they meet admission and program requirements of both the School of Social Work and the other graduate program. In the past students have combined graduate degrees in social work with degrees in law and education. There are no shared credits with these areas of study.
