Ph.D. Application Process

Two Applications Required

The Ph.D. application process requires two separate applications: one to the School of Social Work and one to the University of Minnesota Graduate School. Each of these applications must be completed fully and accurately.

  • School of Social Work Application
The application packet is a PDF document and contains all instructions and application forms. It also includes answers to many questions you may have about the application process. It is designed to be printed and submitted as hard copy. If you need a printed copy of the application we are happy to send it. Please contact us at 612-624-4704 or toll free at 800-779-8636, or e-mail swadmis@umn.edu.

Deadlines

The School of Social Work application has several deadline dates. They are described in the application packet and the timetable for application and admission.

Start Early!
The Ph.D. application is detailed and requires the involvement and cooperation of other people. We recommend that you start early to allow plenty of time to order transcripts, request letters of recommendation, and do the required research and writing.

Information Sessions

Each fall the SSW offers a Ph.D. admissions information session in the Twin Cities area. Prospective Ph.D. applicants can meet SSW faculty, who will discuss their teaching and research, and also talk with current doctoral students about the program.

The Ph.D. information session for fall 2007 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17, 2007. This information session will allow prospective Ph.D. applicants to find out more about the program, talk with faculty, and learn about the application process. To RSVP or if you have questions about the session, contact Jan Goodno at 612-624-4258 or jgoodno@umn.edu.
