Received the 2005 John Robert Gregg Award in Business Education
(Awarded April 2006 at the National Business Education Conference in Tampa, Florida)

Teaching and Research Interests

  • Business and marketing teacher education
  • Teaching end-user computer applications software
  • Using applications software to support teaching

A current research project, a three-phase Delphi Study of the purposes and future directions for business education, is supported by the Delta Pi Epsilon Foundation with Cyril Kesten, Professor at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. An important subgroup in this national research project has been The Agnew Group, a group of 12 business educators supported originally by funds from New York University who have focused on research related to the future of the field.

Over the years, I have maintained a research program related to my ongoing interest in teaching desk-top computing skills and using business application software as a tool for teaching business content. I favor business software that can teach students problem-solving skills and develop familiarity with business contexts as well as teach basic business skills. I have developed an example of such sophisticated, multipurpose instructional software, linking a popular business spreadsheet with concepts relative to the time value of money. I completed a National Center for Research in Vocational Education (NCRVE) project on developing employment-related office technology skills, a study that was awarded the 2001 National Independent Research Award by Delta Pi Epsilon.

In addition to the NCRVE project on developing employment-related office technology skills, other research in this area has surveyed the uses of applications software by computer users in the Twin Cities area. Another national project supported by the Delta Pi Epsilon Foundation has used critical incident interviews to examine the nature of work activities and problem-solving practices of primary computer users. My sabbatical in 2001-2002 with Thomson/NETg based in Naperville, Illinois, (an international online technology training company) supported my involvement with research related to teaching software skills.

Curing 2002-2005, an important professional involvement for me was my role as National Vice President and then President of Delta Pi Epsilon. In 2005 I received the John Robert Gregg Award in Business Education, awarded at the Nat’l Business Education Association Conference in 2006.
