I was born and raised in East Chain, Minnesota.
After high school, I attended Trinity College in Chicago for one
year. My college experience was halted with a brief time in
farming in East Chain Township followed by two years of military
duty with the U.S. Army in Korea. I then attended the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln and received a bachelor's degree in
agricultural education in 1960. After 3.5 years of teaching high
school agricultural education in Hooper, Nebraska, I spent two
years as a supervisor of agricultural education with the
Nebraska State Department of Education.
I received a master's degree in agricultural
education in 1966 and my Ed.D. degree in secondary education
from the University of Nebraska in 1969. After serving as an
assistant professor at the University of Nebraska for three
years, I joined the agricultural education faculty at the
University of Minnesota in 1972.
I have focused my efforts over the years in
teaching methods, student teacher supervising, student advising,
and developing various courses and programs in agricultural
education. Agricultural education subject matter areas provide a
unique context for applying principles in a real and practical
manner to the basic academic areas of education. The development
of agricultural education programs at the middle school level in
Minnesota is a challenge facing us today. Teaching is a real a
privilege. The opportunity to influence students for the rest of
their lives is an awesome responsibility.
I have been most fortunate in receiving several
recognitions for my teaching and work with students. Some of
these include:
- Horace T. Morse-Amoco Foundation, University of
Minnesota. For outstanding contribution to undergraduate
education.
- Distinguished Teaching Award, College of Education and
Human Development
- Distinguished Teaching Award, College of Agricultural,
Food and Environmental Sciences
- Robert H. Beck Distinguished Faculty Member Award, College of Education and Human Development

- Selected as the Outstanding Teacher Educator (Russell
Guin Award), American Association of Agricultural Education
