Alumni Society
Fall is always a special time of the year at the University with
the flurry of back-to-school activities. It’s a time for returning
to learning—and that is no exception for our Education Alumni
Society.
Once again we are hosting an exciting learning opportunity for
alumni to reconnect with the college: the third annual Alumni
College day on Saturday, Oct. 30. Alumni College is a day of
informal classes on campus for alumni, friends, and education
professionals. “Students” will hear presentations by distinguished
and rising-star faculty about their research. The day also includes
a lunch with Dean Steven Yussen and a tour of the University
Libraries Archive Center. Join us for this popular event. Become a
student again, just for the fun of it. This time there will be no
tests.
At the society’s annual planning retreat in August we established
three focused priorities that demonstrate our appreciation for
students, both present and past:
- Growing our alumni society’s student scholarship fund as
part of President Bruininks’ “Promise of Tomorrow” campaign to
raise $150 million in scholarships. We invite you to add your
name to the list of generous contributors.
- Planning and implementing a pilot mentoring program for
students in cooperation with the college’s student services
office.
- Planning exciting and special ways to celebrate and honor
our many distinguished alumni during the college’s 2005–06
centennial year.
The alumni society board of directors welcomes two new members,
Randy Johnson (B.S., ’75, park and recreation) and Louis Quast
(Ph.D., ’03, human resource development). The 12-member board,
representing all departments of the college, will carry out our
mission of creating lifelong connections with alumni, supporting
students through a variety of services, offering alumni enrichment
programs, and serving as advocates for the college and the
University with the legislature.
As the new president of our alumni society, I am honored to
represent you—our more than 45,000 alumni who live around the
country and the world, of which over 5,000 have stayed connected to
the University by becoming a member of the University of Minnesota
Alumni Association. To join UMAA and our alumni society, go to
