New Center at the Center!

Assessment and Training Center

  CEED is pleased to announce the Assessment and Training Center (ATC). The Center has been conceptualized as a way to transmit CEED’s unique observation and assessment skill and knowledge to the greater early childhood community, for program evaluation and improvement purposes.

December 27, 2007 Marti Erickson, senior fellow at CEED, advises parents not to focus solely on the so-called "terrible twos" when raising toddlers. Arthur Reynolds, CEED Fellow, is also featured concerning his work in preschool intervention and the Chicago Public Schools preschool program.

~ Fall 2007 ~

CEED moved into the new Education Sciences Building on October 22!

Mineral Resources BuildingCEED, along with the Department of Educational Psychology and the Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI) moved into the new Education Sciences Building.

CEED is located on the ground level, facing the river and next to the building's coffee shop.

The old Mineral Resources Research Center on River Road was renovated for this purpose. This building is where the process for refining taconite was invented and the slogan for refurbishing the building for CEHD purposes has been Mines to Minds.

Distinguished Scholar Lecture

Science, Practice and Sound Bites: Possibilities and Perils in Taking Psychology Public

This presentation helped participants increase awareness of popular misconceptions about attachment theory and research and their application to practice, policy and parenting; helped increase understanding of challenges presented when the cultures of academia, public policy, and media intersect; and guided participants in identifying current opportunities and strategies for using developmental theory and research to advance public knowledge and sound practice and policy.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently highlighted the results of a 19 year follow-up study that looked at the long-term effects of the Child-Parent Center (CPC) program. The CPC program provided intensive instruction from pre-school through 3rd grade for children and job skills training, parenting skills training, educational classes and social services for their parents. Findings provide evidence that early education programs can have a wide range of positive effects into adulthood. Read the full press release

The Other End of University Avenue: Growing a University-Capitol Relationship to Improve Public Policies for Children and Families

This poster describes a variety of formal College-based activities that aim to build relationships between and among policymakers and the University community. Projects include the Children, Youth and Families Consortium policy work, the McEvoy Lectures on Early Childhood and Public Policy, the Family Policy Forum, the Early Childhood Caucus Leadership retreat, and recent data from a survey of state legislators' views of the University and research.

Arthur Reynolds is a CEED Fellow and directs the Chicago Longitudinal Study, which investigates the impact of the Child-Parent Center early education program. He is a professor of child development at the University of Minnesota.
