Attending to the development
of early childhood movement skills is critical in addressing
positive developmental trajectories and avoiding cumulative
risk. For typically developing children, this skill development
is sometimes relegated to recess or free-time play rather than
being viewed as an academic discipline. For children with
special needs, occupational or physical therapy are often
brought to bear on the education. And, sometimes developmental
and adapted physical education services are required. Yet, there
is confusion as to what is the most efficient and effective
delivery of services and, in some cases, what constitutes
typical motor development performance and the curriculum to
facilitate skills. For young children, movement is an important
and necessary part of their educational life.
Early Childhood Movement
Consultation is a collaborative endeavor with school
districts that would address any or all of the following:
- Training in typical
child development for teachers in early childhood
- Training on monitoring
young children's movement skill development using Individual
Growth and Development Indicators (IGDIs)
- Training on
interventions given IGDI data that shows declining or flat
trajectories
- Assistance with issues
of services with Occupational and Physical Therapies (OT and
PT), as well as Development and Adapted Physical Education
(D/APE)
- Assistance with OT/PT
bank of rubrics for fine and gross motor skill monitoring
- Development of
preschool movement programs in early childhood and, when
necessary, early childhood special education
