Admission to the
graduate programs is based on the applicant’s academic record, letters of
recommendation, Graduate Record Examination scores, TOEFL scores where
applicable, a statement of purpose (goals and interests), and perceived program
"fit." Program area faculty review applicant files and make admission
decisions on the basis of a holistic view of an applicant’s credentials. Most
students admitted have a substantial background in education, especially in the
emphasis area(s) of interest, and show a strong interest in research.
In reviewing applicant’s files, faculty pay special
attention to the statement of purpose, as it serves as an important source of
information about an applicant’s background, goals, interests, and
motivations. The statement may be up to three pages in length and should be
constructed thoughtfully.
