Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers

The Minnesota Board of Teaching has mandated that teacher education programs assess pre-service teachers according to their actual performance to a set of specific standards. These ten Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers are based on the national-level Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Standards. To be recommended for initial licensure, pre-service teachers must surpass the completion of courses to satisfactorily demonstrate their knowledge, dispositions, and skills in each of the ten standards.

Standard 1 differentiates one licensure field from another; however, listed here it defines subject matter generically for all teaching fields. Standards Two through Ten are the same for all teaching fields. Licensure rules specific to each subject matter area have been approved and may be obtained via the Internet from the State Legislature: www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/arule/8710. For licensing forms and processes contact the Minnesota Department of Education: http://education.state.mn.us/mde/Teacher_Support/Educator_Licensing/.
