Support for research and teaching
Research support
The college’s Office of Research Development is responsible for
enhancing and expanding our substantial record of research productivity.
The Office of Research Development and the Financial Services Office
work together to support faculty and staff in all aspects of sponsored
activity—from the development of an idea, to finding funding and
proposal development, through the ongoing financial management of
sponsored grants and contracts.
College support for research
- The Summer Research Support for Faculty program provides
funds, on a competitive basis, to support faculty research efforts
during the summer months.
- Guide to college expertise—A
listing of college faculty and staff by areas of expertise in
a wide variety of fields.
- Research projects at
the College—Publications about the impact of college research
on improving education policies and practices and enhancing
all aspects of human life.
University support for research
- The Office
of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) oversees all aspects
of research at the University of Minnesota's five campuses,
providing guidance to individual researchers and managing the
system-wide research enterprise.
-
Internal
funding programs for faculty and students are coordinated
by the OVPR and the Dean of the Graduate School.
- Experts@Minnesota—A
database of faculty and staff researchers at the University
of Minnesota. Use it to locate subject matter experts and/or
to identify research partners.
Teaching support
Support for instructional uses of technology is provided by
instructional technology fellows in each department.
The University's Digital Media Center also provides consultation
services.
Technology support
General technology support is provided to faculty and staff by
technical coordinators in each department who provide desktop and
software support, by an online helpdesk and server administration
at the College, and by a University phone helpline staffed 24 hours
a day.
University climate
The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMTC), was named
among top institutions in two categories—overall effectiveness
of policies and global satisfaction—of the Collaborative on
Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) study at Harvard.
COACHE surveyed junior, tenure-track faculty at institutions
across the country, asking them to assess their experiences
regarding promotion and tenure, the nature of their work,
policies and practices, and the general climate, culture, and
level of collegiality on their campuses. The findings were
reported Dec. 5 in Inside Higher Education. See the
story at Insider Higher Education.
