Family education

The college’s family education program is one of the premier programs of its kind. Its faculty are recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for their contributions to research, teaching, and service in which the interests of families are a priority. The program offers M.Ed., M.A., Ph.D. degree options, and prepares licensed family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers and parent educators.

This program prepares family educators and researchers who:

  • teach, conduct research, and advocate for families in a critically reflective manner;
  • establish an educational environment that enables individuals to think critically and reflectively about the family both as an individual unit and as a societal institution;
  • support families in developing their capacities to create and evaluate goals and alternative solutions to the problems of everyday life, and assume responsibility for consequences of their decisions for the global society and environment.

Known for its progressive curriculum, the family education program prepares students to assume educational and leadership roles on behalf of families in Minnesota, nationally, and in many parts of the world. Graduates experience success in obtaining positions in colleges and universities, in public and private schools, and in community-based organizations and institutions. Many have assumed leadership roles as deans, professors, and coordinators. The employment rates of graduates from the family and consumer sciences teacher licensure program are consistently high.
