Talent
development and gifted education
Although many Minnesota schools offer programs in "gifted and
talented" education, very few have teachers with specific preparation
in the field. This certificate will prepare educators to develop, implement,
and supervise programs for gifted and talented students in schools and other
settings.
Its focus is research-based and highlights the cognitive processes that
underlie the special needs of gifted and talented students as well as the
issues surrounding identification of students for such educational services.
Students in the certificate program will develop an awareness of the
special needs of gifted learners, will understand the impact of that
designation on the student and the student's consequent educational and
emotional challenges, and will be able to synthesize their research on
gifted and talented educational theory with direct student experiences.
