Human
development in education
The psychological
foundations of education track within the College’s
Department of Educational Psychology offers opportunities to focus in
several different areas of specialized study, including human development in
education. Study plans usually are
individualized according to the student’s interests and goals, structured
with the guidance of the graduate adviser, and require minimal core
coursework.
This field of study is interdisciplinary, crossing boundaries in
educational psychology, child psychology, and psychology. Human development
in education focuses on issues surrounding development and education across
the lifespan. Coursework is determined by the student and graduate studies
committee and could include classes in knowledge and skill development,
development of reading and higher cognitive functions, the role of play in
human development, aggression in schools, analyses of longitudinal data, and
meta-analysis. Graduates in this field often go on to do research and to
teach in colleges and universities, or develop careers in human service
organizations, government agencies, or health sciences settings.
