Literacy

The field of literacy education allows students to focus on several areas involving language and education, including children's literature, English education, language arts education, and reading and writing education. The field attracts teachers or specialists in K-12 schools, as well as educators at colleges or universities and professionals in the private sector.

A student choosing to pursue literacy education in the College will work with faculty members who are nationally known scholars in the field of literacy studies and whose textbooks and research form the basis of a significant amount of the work being done in the field today. In addition, the College is home to the Literacy Initiative, a collaborative outreach program designed to raise the literacy rates of Twin Cities children that involves the University, Twin Cities school districts, and a wide range of community organizations.

Master's requirements include coursework, an examination, and a project, usually completed in one to two years. Requirements at the doctoral level include coursework, several examinations, and a dissertation. Full-time doctoral students typically complete their studies in two to four years.
