Additional licensure in DAPE

For students obtaining a DAPE license, which is an additional license for Minnesota teachers holding a license in physical education, 19 credits are required as follows:

Required kinesiology courses: 10 credits

• KIN 5103—Developmental Adapted Physical Education (3 credits) (assessment)
• KIN 5104—Physical Activities for Persons with Disabilities (3 credits) (categorical disability)
• KIN 5196—Practicum: Developmental Adapted Physical Education (4 credits)

Required educational psychology courses: 9 credits

• EPSY 5613—Foundations of Special Education I (3 credits)
• EPSY 5614—Foundations of Special Education II (3 credits)
• EPSY 5616—Behavioral Analysis and Classroom Management (3 credits)

Total = 19 credits

* Students pursuing licensure in DAPE may apply these credits to a master of education (M.Ed.) degree in applied kinesiology with a DAPE emphasis.

Master of education in applied kinesiology (DAPE emphasis) requirements

To obtain a master of education in applied kinesiology with a DAPE emphasis, a total of 30 graduate semester credits is required. After taking the required DAPE licensure courses shown above (10 credits in kinesiology, 9 credits in educational psychology), the other remaining courses (11 credits) needed to complete the M.Ed. are as follows:

Required kinesiology courses: 6 credits

• KIN 4981—Understanding Kinesiology Research (3 credits) (preferred) (adviser's permission required) or
  KIN 5981—Research Methodology in Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport (3 credits)
• KIN 5995—Research Problems in Applied Kinesiology (3 credits)

Other kinesiology courses: 4 credits*

• 4 credits in other kinesiology courses

Other elective courses: 1 credit*

• 1 credit in an elective course outside of kinesiology

*As an alternative, students may take one 3-credit kinesiology course and one 2- or 3-credit elective course, which may be easier to accomplish.

Total = 30 credits (minimum)

License and degree constraints

• Grades for all courses applied toward a DAPE licensure must be at least a C-, if taken for a letter grade, or at least an S (Satisfactory), if taken S/N (Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory).
• No more than 40% of the M.Ed. program may be completed before admission to the program, and all coursework must be completed within 7 years, beginning with the date of the earliest course taken, not the date of admission to the M.Ed. program.
• No more than 8 graduate semester credits may be included from an institution other than the University of Minnesota.
• No more than 33% of the program may be completed on the S/N grading system.
• Credits must be at the 5xxx level or above unless adviser approves 4xxx-level courses. 8xxx-level courses may be taken with the permission of the adviser and instructor.
• A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required for the M.Ed. with DAPE emphasis degree.

Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) requires that persons applying for a teaching license in developmental and adapted physical education (DAPE) must take the Praxis II: Subject Assessment. Contact Student Services in 110 Wulling Hall (612-625-6501) to obtain a packet. The test registration number is 020353. Additional information about the Praxis exams is available on the Student Services Web site.
