Kinesiology emphasis areas
Motor learning/motor development
Motor learning/development includes two related areas of movement
behavior inquiry. Motor Learning is the study of the learning of
movement skills and the factors that mediate learning, such as practice
or knowledge of results. Motor Development is the study of the changes
in movement behavior over the life span and the processes or factors
underlying these changes. Although a lifespan approach is emphasized,
students may focus on one or more specific age periods, such as infancy,
early childhood, adolescence, or later adulthood. Much of the research
in motor learning and development is carried out in the
Gait and Posture Laboratory or the
Human Sensorimotor Control Laboratory,
which are equipped with an array of movement analysis systems. Motor
development research projects are also conducted in off-campus field
settings.
