The school is home to an internationally recognized program in exercise science and health enhancement in the Laboratory of Physiological Health and Exercise Science (LPHES) and also to the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport, the only center in the world dedicated specifically to issues related to girls and women in sport and physical activity and made possible by an endowment from Dr. Dorothy Tucker.

The School of Kinesiology was one of 32 institutions whose doctoral program was ranked by the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education (AAKPE) in 2005. Variables assessed included:

  • Professional accomplishments of the faculty including rank, refereed publications, number of Fellows in AAKPE, and professional organization membership and service;
  • Caliber and quantity of graduate students based on GRE scores; number of applicants and number accepted and enrolled; student financial support and training; and the number of graduates pursuing post-doctoral training and full-time employment in professional positions in the field upon graduation.

Based on a scoring system weighing these faculty and student indices, the School of Kinesiology ranked 11th among the 32 programs. The School’s program was ranked fourth among nine of the Big 10 universities participating in the survey, ahead of Big 10 programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University.
