Certificate program
Program
The certificate in coaching provides a coordinated, meaningful, and functional framework from which teachers and future coaches can launch their coaching careers. Offered by the School of Kinesiology (KIN) in the College of Education & Human Development (CEHD), the program is designed to exceed requirements for K-12 head varsity coaches.
The program offers an integrated series of courses that prepares undergraduate or graduate students to:
- Discuss and apply their knowledge of athletic injury prevention and care
- Design sport-specific practice sessions that are safe and age-appropriate for athletes of different abilities and levels of fitness
- Properly apply the training principles of specificity, frequency, duration, and intensity specific to their sport
- Organize and integrate physical, social, and mental skills development into sports programs
- Articulate their own philosophy of coaching
- Discuss the role and responsibility of coaching in society
- Differentiate between command and cooperative styles of coaching
- Help athletes establish and achieve realistic personal goals
- Articulate and understand basic legal liability and risk management issues in coaching
Admission
Admission is open to degree-seeking and non-degree seeking students.
Submission of a Coaching Program Application Form [.pdf] is required (available at School of Kinesiology, 220 Cooke Hall, 1900 University Ave. S.E., Minneapolis, MN 55455; 612-625-5300. When space is limited, priority of admission will be granted to those majoring or minoring in kinesiology and sport management and to those working toward teaching licensure.
Curriculum
Students must complete at least 15 semester credits or equivalent. The coaching certificate requires all of following courses, as well as one course or approved equivalent from each of the course categories listed below:
- KIN 3113—First Responder for Coaches and
Athletic Trainers (3 cr)
- or current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification
- KIN 3114—Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries (3 cr)
- KIN 3143—Organization and Management of Sport (3 cr)
- or KIN 5725—Organization and Management of Physical Education and Sport (3 cr)
- KIN 4697—Student Teaching: Coaching (1-10 cr; may be taken additional times with instructor consent for a maximum of 10 credits overall)

Registration
After admission to the program, degree-seeking students can register for courses online.
Students not already admitted to the University of Minnesota and who do not wish to apply to a degree program should complete a First-Time Registration for Non-Degree Seeking Students packet [.pdf]. Note: Certificate coursework completed with undergraduate student status cannot be applied to graduate-level degree programs.
Tuition
Tuition varies depending on a student's degree program, student status, and residency. Students seeking the certificate only pay the CEHD departmental master's tuition rate. Students enrolled in Graduate School programs pay Graduate School tuition rates; students enrolled in undergraduate programs pay undergraduate tuition rates.
The University of Minnesota Board of Regents determines tuition rates annually before fall semester. For current tuition rates and reciprocity policies, check the College’s tuition and fees page.
Residents of Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Manitoba may be eligible for special tuition reciprocity rates comparable to Minnesota resident rates.
