M.Ed. Handbook

The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is recognized as one of the finest in the country. As a member of the College, you will become a part of a tradition that began in 1906, a tradition of innovative teaching, community service, research, and development. The College is comprised of six academic departments, and nearly 20 research and service centers, all staffed by outstanding faculty.

Students in the master of education (M.Ed.) program examine current innovations in education and human development, become active participants in the ongoing effort to improve educational programs inside and outside of traditional schools, and take on expanding leadership roles and responsibilities with skill and expertise. As an M.Ed. student, you become a part of the critical mass of students, educators, and faculty addressing important issues in education and human development.

Student Services provides administrative support for your program and serves as your College office. Student Services services include student recruitment, admission/program advising, registration assistance, degree clearance, professional and career services, licensure and endorsement information. Your program progress and approved program plan are documented and filed at Student Services for official degree clearance.

As a student support office, Student Services works with College units and the dean’s office to develop policies and to coordinate and administer Collegewide programs and services. Student Services seeks to ensure that College decision-making processes are clear—that decision-makers are informed about student needs, policies, and programs meet the needs of the College and the students, and that students are responded to in a systematic way.

How to use this handbook

The M.Ed. Handbook is designed to guide you through your graduate program to familiarize you with the College of Education and Human Development, including its resources, policies, and procedures. It should serve as a ready reference for you and your faculty adviser throughout your studies, providing answers to many of your questions and guidance as to where to go when you need further information. Refer to this handbook for valuable information and feel free to contact Student Services whenever you need additional assistance.

The first section of the handbook addresses advising and registration questions followed by information on policies, academic departments, and services. Throughout the handbook you will see Grad Notes, observations gathered from alumni, students, faculty, staff, and advisers.

This handbook was prepared by Student Services staff to help students navigate the M.Ed. program. Student Services appreciates the support and contributions of CEHD faculty, staff, and students, who have made this handbook possible. We hope you find this handbook to be a useful tool. We hope that you find your experience as a University of Minnesota M.Ed. student both challenging and enriching.

Note to M.Ed. students:
Students in the M.Ed./initial licensure and M.Ed./professional studies programs are classified as graduate-level, professional students in the College of Education and Human Development and must follow College policies and procedures. M.Ed. students are not classified as Graduate School students.
