Participation costs and eligibility requirements

Participation costs

Upward Bound is federally funded by the United States Department of Education and sponsored by the University of Minnesota. There is no charge to participate in the program. However, all applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements.

Eligibility requirements

Who can apply for the University of Minnesota Upward Bound Program?

Eligible students must meet the following conditions:

  1. First generation college-bound students (whose parents or guardian did not complete a four-year degree) and/or students from families meeting income guidelines.
  2. Students who attend Minneapolis North, South, or Edison High School.
  3. Students who are in their freshman or sophomore year of high school.

Eligibility-at-a-glance

Use the following checklist to determine potential eligibility for Upward Bound. Keep in mind that answering “yes” to one of the following items does not guarantee eligibility or acceptance. Also, if none of the below describes you or your family, you may still apply to our program. This is only a guideline.
