About Nate
Nate Whittaker began his journey in higher education in the General College back in 1996. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in the field of multicultural education and youth studies (with a leadership studies minor) in 2001. In the spring of 2005, Nate completed his master’s of education degree in youth development leadership with an emphasis in social justice education from the College of Education and Human Development. Nate has had the humbling opportunity to do “peace work” with young people in conflicted areas of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and has also lived in the Cape Town area of South Africa where he worked with young people in a post-Apartheid context. These opportunities have instilled a very deep sense of commitment to under-privileged communities and have given Nate a sense of multicultural global-citizenship and an obligation to progressive activism.
Besides working as an undergraduate adviser for the TRiO program here at the University of Minnesota, Nate is a professional dance music producer and deejay signed with multiple independent labels worldwide. He is also a writer, often focusing on the lived-experience of young people and the more “spiritual” realms of social justice work. He has a black lab named Dio and enjoys coffee shop conversations, long drives with loud music, and events that unify people such as concerts, demonstrations, and protests.
