Prerequisites for elementary education foundations
Preferred minimums for admission consideration to the upper division major
- 60 credits completed or in progress
- 35 hours of K-6 classroom experience completed
- At least one-half of Content Areas 1-6 completed or in progress:
Content Area 1: Basic requirements
- Introduction to Psychology
- Introductory to the Elementary School
- Introduction to Linguistics
- Fundamentals of Music (this requirement may be waived with band or orchestra experience at least through high school grade 11)
Content Area 2: Mathematics
- College algebra
- Statistical reasoning or logic or calculus
- Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I (take after acceptance into major)
- Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II (take after acceptance into major)
Content Area 3: Science
- Biological science w/lab
- Physical science w/lab
- Earth science w/lab
- Science elective
Content Area 4: Social studies
- American History (1865-present)
- Non-U.S. history elective
- Human geography
- Cultural pluralism/diversity in the U.S.
Content Area 5: Communication arts and literature
- First-year writing
- Literature of American minorities
- Contemporary literature: international perspective
- Arts and humanities elective
Content Area 6: Second Language
- Completion of this area is recommended, but not required
- One year of college-level second language
