Requirements for licensure
Students seeking Minnesota state teaching licensure must complete the following steps:
- Students must have a minimum 2.50 GPA to meet state licensure requirements.
- Credential file must be activated and fee paid before licensure clearance.
- First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification must be current at the time of licensure completion.
- Licensure recommendations. To be licensed, students must complete all the College’s content, pedagogy, and clinical experience requirements as well as state-mandated requirements. Students’ performance will be assessed throughout the program according to Minnesota’s Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers (SEPT). College faculty, staff, and experienced teachers will evaluate students at program completion for licensure recommendation.
- Licensure materials. State licensure application materials are available from Student Services, 612-625-6501, or the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), 651-582-8691.
- All persons applying for, or seeking renewal of, a state of Minnesota teaching license shall be subject to a criminal background check and conduct review by the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). A $31 fee is assessed and must be paid by money order or cashier’s check.
- The state of Minnesota requires that persons applying for a teaching
license must pass the following standardized Praxis tests. Tests are
administered by Educational Testing Service
(ETS) and questions may be directed to that agency by calling (toll-free)
1-800-772-9476. For test locations, follow the "Test Locations" link under
"Praxis I Test" or "Praxis II Test" on the
ETS Praxis page.
- Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) for reading, writing, and mathematics. Students can take these tests while they are still undergraduate students, and must take them before they can be recommended for licensure. Tests may be taken either by pencil/paper (PPST) or by computer (CBT is offered on campus at the University’s Computer-Based Testing Center, 9 Eddy Hall, 192 Pillsbury Drive S.E., Minneapolis MN 55455; 612-624-5520).
- Praxis II: Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests—Technology Education. This test (pencil/paper only) must be taken no later than the term preceding the final student teacher experience.
- Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests. This test (pencil/paper only) must be taken during the final term of the student teaching experience.
