Criteria: Applicants must have been admitted to an advanced study program (M.A., M.Ed., M.S.W., Ph.D., specialist certificate, or Ed.D.) and earned a minimum of 15 credits within that program, have a minimum GPA of 3.8, and be an active student. Selection is based on academic performance and on faculty recommendations regarding potential for making significant contributions to the field of education and human development. Students pursuing initial teaching licensure are not eligible for this scholarship. Previous recipients of this award are also ineligible.
Application: Deadline is usually January 31 of each year. Announcements are sent to all students in early December.
Each candidate must complete an application and submit a resume or vitae, a current transcript (student-issued), a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation from one College faculty member. Criteria: All individuals admissible to an M.A. or Ph.D. degree program with an emphasis in family education who are applying, or who plan to apply, for summer or fall admission are eligible to apply. Consideration in the selection process will be given to academic achievement, leadership potential, professional goals, and experiences related to family education.

Preference will be given to students who have completed their undergraduate course of study at the University of Minnesota.

Community Outreach and Engagement Award

Purpose
This award is given to recognize eligible faculty, staff and
student involvement in public service and to encourage and
emphasize civic engagement as a permanent priority of the CEHD.
Eligibility
Faculty, P&A staff, civil service/bargaining unit staff, and graduate
or undergraduate students participating in the CEHD may apply. An individual may
not receive this award more than once; however, previous nominees who did not
receive the award may be re-nominated.
Criteria
Successful nominees should have:
- Evidence of solid accomplishments in the improvement of direct services that are provided by educational, health, and related human development agencies. Cited activities should be consistent with the College mission and reflect the College’s commitment to a bi-directional involvement in the type of activities inherent in the UM’s adopted definition of engagement. Collaborative activities should result in long-term, lasting changes in the direct services of the organizations and agencies.
- The community outreach and engagement contributions should be visible, lasting, and directly traceable to their individual efforts. The contributions should be made to service organizations and activities on a relatively long-term basis, generally for two or more years.
- The contributions should be made to non-profit organizations or groups that align with CEHD’s mission.
- This award is not intended to recognize contributions to professional organizations.
- Sustained community engagement over and above the normal expectations of that person’s role or in the case of a student, over and above normal course requirements.
- Any supporting documentation provided by relevant community organizations.
Nomination Documentation
Individuals who are not specialists in the nominee's field will read
the nomination materials. Successful nominations document how the experiences of
the nominee meet the criteria of the award. It is strongly suggested that the
letters specifically address the criteria in the order they are listed. Five
complete sets and the original, in 12 point font and with one-inch margins, of
the following documentation are required:
- A nomination letter of no more than three pages advocating for and interpreting the case for why this individual has demonstrated the award criteria. Nominees may not nominate themselves.
- A personal statement by the nominee of no more than three pages describing his or her approach to community outreach and engagement and objectives and methods, giving examples when appropriate.
- Nominee's abbreviated professional vita of no more than three pages, made pertinent to the award criteria and including appointment and years of service in CEHD, GC, or CHE (Vita or resume will not be reviewed if it is more than three pages). For students, a current resume of no more than three pages made pertinent to the award criteria will be acceptable.
- Two letters of support from professors, colleagues, advisers, administrators, or non-University sources citing specific examples of the nominee’s community outreach and engagement activities.

Selection Process
Nominations will be reviewed by the CEHD Honors and Awards work group, which

Corcoran Research Travel Award

The Corcoran Research Travel Award is a fellowship to be awarded to a graduate student, enrolled through the Graduate School, who is working on a doctoral degree in some aspect of evaluation and policy studies. The student can be in any department of the College. High priority will be given to support students presenting at national or international conferences related to educational evaluation and policy. The award is intended to pay for documented airfare, registration fees, hotel costs and other travel expenses related to the presentation, not to exceed $2,500 per student.
Upon completion of national or international travel, students receiving this award will be expected to submit a short report (200 words) reporting on the amount of funds used, their activities supported by the fellowship and their perceived benefits. This report should be sent to the College of Education and Human Development Office of Development and copies will be shared with the donor and the appropriate faculty adviser.

Criteria: Awarded to an incoming Ph.D. student who demonstrates academic aptitude and a commitment to literacy education. The assistantship seeks to promote diversity within the literacy program through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students from diverse backgrounds. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose teaching and work experiences have been grounded in urban or rural educational settings, and whose research interests focus on issues of diversity, or on communities traditionally underserved by our schools and educational research.

Criteria: This scholarship is open to all undergraduate and graduate majors in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and a major GPA of 3.4 or higher (minimum of 9 semester credits in courses offered through the School of Kinesiology).

Purpose: The goal of this assistantship is to maximize the research experience and opportunities for graduate students in the field of educational measurement.
Criteria: Applicant must be a student in the psychological foundations or quantitative methods tracks within educational psychology with preference given to applicants who are focusing on measurement and evaluation. Award consists of 50% support (25% teaching assistant and 25% research assistant). TA portion is based on applicant’s interests and background and available positions within the program.

Eligibility
Currently registered CEHD graduating seniors or graduate students in
good standing (nominations may be submitted by students, faculty, and staff).
Criteria
Please address the following relevant criteria in your nomination and
give examples:
- Leadership skills and ability to empower others.
- Positive impact on CEHD, academic department, major program(s) and/or its student organizations.
- Leadership and service contributions to the college, University, and surrounding community.
Nomination Documentation
Individuals who are not specialists in the nominee's field will read
the nomination materials. Successful nominations document how the experiences of
the nominee meet the criteria of the award. Five complete sets and the original,
in 12 point font and with one-inch margins, of the following documentation are
required:
- A nomination letter of no more than three pages advocating for and interpreting the case for why this individual has demonstrated the award criteria and addressing nominator’s relationship to history with the nominee. Nominees may not nominate themselves.
- Nominee's abbreviated professional vita or resume made pertinent to the award criteria. Vita or resume should be a maximum of three pages (Vita or resume will not be reviewed if it is more than three pages).
- Nominee’s current transcript.
- A statement of less than one page containing personal goals, prepared by the nominee.
- A CEHD

This form will insure that all nominees and nominators are contacted in the most efficient manner.
Selection Process
Nominations will be reviewed by the CEHD Honors and Awards work group,
which will make a recommendation to the dean, who will make the final decision.
Priscilla Rugg Scholar Family Education Graduate Assistantship
Amount: One 9-month, 50 percent graduate assistantship
will be awarded for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Jason David Schleien Memorial Endowment
Scholarship is inactive.

Criteria: One or two scholarships may be awarded annually to meritorious students. Applicants must be students pursuing majors in recreation, park and leisure studies or areas with an interest in serving individuals with disabilities.

Robert Schreiner Memorial Endowment
Amount: One non-renewable annual award of $2,500
Deadline: Ph.D. literacy students are considered for this
award in years when funds are available. Notice of competition
for this award is announced in December.

Seashore Graduate Fellowship
Amount: One award of up to $2,500

Criteria: Applicants must be doctoral students enrolled in the Graduate School for the academic year in which the award will be made. An applicant’s research interests should focus on issues of broad social inquiry problems, social and cultural change, or social justice. The applicant's dissertation topic should be approved at the time of this award and evidence of a strong academic record should be evident.
Application:
1) Complete the standard
application [.doc], stating that you are applying for the Seashore Endowed
Fellowship.
2) Respond to the items listed below. Responses must be typed or word-processed, and no more than two pages.
- Briefly describe your academic history, your current course of study, and research interests.
- Describe your career aspirations and how this fellowship will be of help to you.
- Share any additional information about yourself or your academic interests you think might be helpful to the awards committee.
- This award may be used to cover any costs associated with completing your dissertation. If this is the case, please indicate how you might use the funds.
3) Provide the following:

- At least two letters of recommendation; one of those letters should be from your adviser.

Dora V. Smith Assistantship

Ruth and Paul Thomas Family Education Graduate Fellowship
Amount: One 9-month, $10,000 fellowship

Criteria: All individuals applying or planning to apply for admission to the M.A. or Ph.D. degree program with an emphasis in family education fall of 2009 are eligible to apply for this fellowship. Consideration in the selection process will be given to academic achievement, leadership potential, professional goals, and experiences related to family education.
Application: The application consists of: (1) a cover letter including name, address, and phone number; (2) a typed double-spaced statement (maximum of two pages) summarizing professional goals and experiences related to family education and academic achievements that pertain to being a family educator; (3) and one letter of recommendation addressing leadership potential. Applications for this fellowship must be submitted to Jessie Eastman in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Room 125 Peik Hall, 159 Pillsbury Drive SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455 by December 1, 2008. Transcripts and GRE scores submitted as part of the application for graduate school will be considered in the selection of the recipient. Criteria: Graduate student in any department or program of CEHD with a preference given to female students. Applicants should show a potential for or demonstrated leadership in academic work and future career. This can be demonstrated through volunteer or professional activities. Academic merit and financial need will also be considered.
Application: Complete the application [.doc] and deliver it to 48 McNeal Hall before the deadline. Awardees will be expected to attend either a June or fall Circle event to accept their award and make brief comments. They will also be expected to report back to the committee about how they used the funds in general and how the scholarship was helpful to them in furthering their career and academic goals.
