College awards for master of education (M.Ed.)/professional studies students

Awards are available to the following student groups, although awards may not be available every semester. See individual award listings and forms for availability and deadlines.

Alumni Society Advanced Study Scholarship

Amount: $500, three or more scholarships to be awarded, depending on available funds
Deadline: January 31
Award date: Spring

Criteria: Applicants must have been admitted to an advanced study program (M.A., M.Ed., M.S.W., Ph.D., specialist certificate, or Ed.D.) and earned a minimum of 15 credits within that program, have a minimum GPA of 3.8, and be an active student. Selection is based on academic performance and on faculty recommendations regarding potential for making significant contributions to the field of education and human development. Students pursuing initial teaching licensure are not eligible for this scholarship. Previous recipients of this award are also ineligible.

Application: Deadline is usually January 31 of each year. Announcements are sent to all students in early December.

Each candidate must complete an application and submit a resume or vitae, a current transcript (student-issued), a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation from one College faculty member. Applicants assume responsibility for requesting letters of recommendation. Please review complete application details before submitting. Alumni Society Larry Wilson Scholarship

Amount: $1000, two scholarships will be awarded
Deadline: January 31

Criteria: Applicants must be degree-seeking students in College programs who have career objectives related to non-school-based education. Recipients will be selected based on leadership potential and a strong academic record. Previous recipients of this award are ineligible.

Application: Announcements are sent to students in early December. Candidates must complete an application form, provide a copy of their current University transcript (student-issued), provide a statement of interest in non-school-based education, and provide a record of involvement in non-school-based education that includes a statement of future plans. One letter of recommendation from a College faculty member is also required. Please review complete application details before submitting. CEHD Non-Resident Educators Scholarship

Amount: $500-$1,000
Deadlines: Summer session-May 15; spring term-December 15; fall term-August 1
Award date: Every academic term

Criteria: Applicants must be Minnesota-licensed teachers or administrators enrolled in College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) professional development programs (e.g., additional licensure, master of education [M.Ed.]/professional studies, master of arts [M.A.], or certificate). Applicants must hold part-time or full-time employment requiring Minnesota teaching or administrative licensure (e.g., teacher, principal, counselor, school psychologist) in a Minnesota school district. Applicants may not be legal residents of Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Manitoba.

Community Outreach and Engagement Award

Amount: Up to three (3) $1000.00 awards may be given.
Deadline: February 29, 2008 by 4:00 p.m.
Award date: Recipient(s) will receive a $1,000 award and a certificate presented at the CEHD Awards and Recognition event on April 24, 2008.

Purpose
This award is given to recognize eligible faculty, staff and student involvement in public service and to encourage and emphasize civic engagement as a permanent priority of the CEHD.

Eligibility
Faculty, P&A staff, civil service/bargaining unit staff, and graduate or undergraduate students participating in the CEHD may apply. An individual may not receive this award more than once; however, previous nominees who did not receive the award may be re-nominated.

Lawrence Scott Doss Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $500

Beverly McConnon Scholarship in Learning Disabilities

Multicultural Recognition Award

Amount: Up to two (2) awards of $1000 may be given.

Purpose
This award recognizes significant professional or extracurricular contributions to and promotion of multicultural relations and perspectives.

Eligibility
CEHD staff, advisers, faculty, graduate, or undergraduate students who deserve recognition for their outstanding multicultural efforts.

Criteria
Nominations are invited for individuals who, as a part of their professional or extracurricular work, have made outstanding multicultural efforts to the CEHD community in the following areas of impact:

J. Anna Norris Award

Amount: Awards vary
Award date: usually in early summer

Criteria: Applicants must be female students accepted into, or enrolled in, the initial teacher licensure program in physical education or in a graduate program which would likely lead to a career in college teaching or adult education in physical education and/or sport.

Outstanding Student Award

Amount: Up to four awards of $250 may be given.
Deadline: February 29, 2008 by 4:00 p.m.
Award date: The recipient(s) will receive a $250 award and a certificate presented at the CEHD Awards and Recognition event on April 24, 2008.

To recognize undergraduate and graduate students for exceptional leadership and/or service contributions to the CEHD, the University community, and the surrounding community.

Eligibility
Currently registered CEHD graduating seniors or graduate students in good standing (nominations may be submitted by students, faculty, and staff).

Lesley Dahl Rylander Endowed Scholarship Fund in Elementary Special Education

Amount: $1,000

Criteria: Applicant must be a student in the initial licensure program in elementary education with a special interest in working in special education at that level.

Jason David Schleien Memorial Endowment

Scholarship is inactive.

Amount: $1,000-2,000
Award date: usually in early spring

Criteria: One or two scholarships may be awarded annually to meritorious students. Applicants must be students pursuing majors in recreation, park and leisure studies or areas with an interest in serving individuals with disabilities.

Application: A 1-2 page proposal describing a project or activity that will address the community inclusion of children and/or adults with developmental disabilities. Obtain proposal specifics from the contact listed. For more information see Jason David Schleien Memorial Endowment.

Women’s Philanthropic Leadership Circle Scholarship

Amount: Single award up to $3,000.
Deadline: March 14, 2008

Criteria: Graduate student in any department or program of CEHD with a preference given to female students. Applicants should show a potential for or demonstrated leadership in academic work and future career. This can be demonstrated through volunteer or professional activities. Academic merit and financial need will also be considered.

Application: Complete the application [.doc] and deliver it to 48 McNeal Hall before the deadline. Awardees will be expected to attend either a June or fall Circle event to accept their award and make brief comments. They will also be expected to report back to the committee about how they used the funds in general and how the scholarship was helpful to them in furthering their career and academic goals.
