What Is Life Like in the Department?
What is life like in the Department of Work and Human
Resource Education? First, there are the classes—which are usually
small enough to provide plenty of opportunity for vigorous
discussion. Some of your most exciting—and demanding—classes
will be those designed for doctoral students alone, giving you a
wonderful opportunity to work closely with your peers and
professors. Many of your classes in the department will include
an exciting variety of professionals—teachers and administrators
from technical colleges, secondary vocational educators,
trainers from business and industry, community educators, and
people from various state education offices, as well as
full-time graduate students from many regions of the United
States and many other nations.
Second, there are the various graduate assistantships with
their research, teaching, and administrative opportunities. You
will work with one or more faculty members on your project in a
close collegial relationship. Often one or more other graduate
students will also be involved in a project, giving you the
experience of cooperative learning and team work.
The third aspect of life in the department is difficult to
categorize; it includes everything else that happens in the
course of an academic year, including student and faculty
research seminars, national teleconferences, and receptions and
parties. For more information about the student experience, you
