Dr. Tasneem Anwar shares their international student experience in CEHD

The University of Minnesota has been proud to welcome international students for 150 years, since the first two arrived from Canada and Denmark in 1874. In celebration of this milestone, we are sharing the stories of CEHD students and alumni.

Dr. Tasneem Anwar, assistant professor, Aga Khan University's Institute for Educational Development, Karachi, Pakistan, shares a little bit about their current experience as well as advice for prospective international students in CEHD.

Dr. Tasneem Anwar

What stands out as a favorite memory as an international student in CEHD?
My time in the STEM education graduate program, paired with my GRAship at EngrTEAMS, stands out as a cherished experience. From the vibrant homecoming week in September 2012 to engaging in deep philosophical discussions on the nature of science with Dr. Fred Finley, every moment was memorable. Collaborating with Dr. Gillian Roehrig on curriculum design, conducting reflective coaching at Saint Paul Public Schools, and presenting at CEHD Research Day were highlights that enriched my academic journey and personal growth.

How is CEHD and your program helping you prepare for your career?
My doctoral program in STEM education at CEHD expanded my understanding of transdisciplinary teaching and learning, leading to my role as a faculty member in science education at the Aga Khan University. Engaging in diverse class discussions, seminars, and conferences greatly enriched my expertise, but the most fulfilling aspect was working closely with my professors. These experiences helped shape me into a respected master trainer, faculty and teacher development facilitator, curriculum expert, and recognized university educator. I owe much of my success to the unwavering support and mentorship I received at the University of Minnesota.

What challenges and opportunities will leaders in your career path encounter in the next 5-15 years? What skills will you need to be successful in light of these challenges and opportunities?
Education is experiencing a significant transformation, with a shift from traditional in-person courses to hybrid and online learning becoming the norm. Flexible programs and personalized learning paths are now widely embraced. To navigate these changes, leaders must demonstrate adaptability, openness to diverse teaching and learning modes, and the ability to integrate innovative educational technologies. Embracing continuous learning, digital dexterity, and strong communication skills will be crucial for success in this evolving landscape in the next 5-15 years.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new international student, what would it be?
The University of Minnesota and CEHD have always welcomed international students with open arms. I fondly recall our diverse graduate group at the STEM Center, which we jokingly called the 'United Nations,' with students from Egypt, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Malaysia, and Ghana. My advice to new international students is to embrace this welcoming environment and be open to learning from everyone—your professors, peers, and even your roommates. Engage fully in the diverse community around you; it will enrich your experience in ways you can't imagine.
