Belaynesh Mekonen shares their international student experience in CEHD
The University of Minnesota has been proud to welcome international students for 150 years, since the first two arrived from Canada and Denmark in 1874. In celebration of this milestone, we are sharing the stories of College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) students and alumni.
Belaynesh Mekonen, a former PhD student and post-doctoral fellow in CEHD, reflects on her current experiences and offers valuable advice for prospective international students. After completing her studies this year, Mekonen returned to her home country of Israel.
What stands out as a favorite memory as an international student in CEHD?
My favorite memories are my relationship with my supervisor and the team at the University and the experience of being part of the University's student community in the wide, beautiful, and pastoral space.
How is CEHD and your program helping you prepare for your career?
The very fact that I was a student at the University, I was exposed to people, programs, and students that expanded the circles of acquaintances and the opportunity to work in cooperation and advance. Making connections is one of the most important things in the academy, so it is important to host international students.
What challenges and opportunities will leaders in your career path encounter in the next 5-15 years? What skills will you need to be successful in light of these challenges and opportunities?
In order to progress in the academy, you need time, resources, professional support, and a mentor who believes in you and guides you. Those who do not have a scholarship or financial support cannot advance and certainly cannot achieve an academic career. Therefore, the University plays an important role in creating opportunities.
If you could give one piece of advice to a new international student, what would it be?
Participate in conferences, meetings, and events organized by the University to meet people and make connections.
