Careers in communications and media

Occupations in the arts, audio/video technology, and vommunications career area relate to designing, producing, exhibiting, performing, writing, and publishing multimedia content, including visual and performing arts and design, journalism, and entertainment services.

The United States exports more goods and services in the communications and media sector than it imports. People all over the world enjoy U.S. made movies, music, television shows, and video games, accounting for tens of billions of dollars in revenue.

Communications and media positions can be responsible for:

  • creating and producing television, movies or video games
  • researching and broadcasting news content
  • writing and editing scripts, books, websites, podcasts and other content
  • performing music, acting, entertaining and playing competitive sports
  • distributing and displaying art and cultural expressions

No two positions are the same in this career area. Contract, gig and freelance work is common. Work schedules and environments vary widely within occupation. For example, some writers travel to a new location for each project they work on. Other writers work from home or go to a corporate office each day.

Creators and workers in all positions need a range of skills, strengths and knowledge to succeed in this career area, including entrepreneurship, critical thinking, versatility, time management, ethics, project management, budgeting, and respect for diversity and equity.

Emerging technologies

Artificial intelligence and digital technologies have dramatically influenced the duties and requirements of position in the media. Successful job candidates have the knowledge and ability to use technology creatively and ethically, and the willingness to continuously update their skills.

Digital media

Social media, podcasts, video, and other web-based content continue to replace the use of print and traditional broadcast media. Employers prefer candidates with experience in digital media, content creation, and social media management.

Critical analysis

Artists and practitioners in this career area can be aware of how to be a critical consumer of content. Job seekers can research content sources and media providers to assess the quality and perspective of their products and business practices.

Work samples

Job candidates in this career area need to have a strong portfolio to share with networking connections and potential employers. The hiring process can be highly competitive for many of these positions, and experience is more valued than training for some positions. Students and job seekers can use social media and digital technology to create their own content and promote their brand.
