Rose Marie Jane Rementina shares their international student experience in CEHD
The University of Minnesota has been proud to welcome international students for 150 years, since the first two arrived from Canada and Denmark in 1874. In celebration of this milestone, we are sharing the stories of College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) students and alumni.
Rose Marie Jane Rementina, a special education MA student, shares their experience and advice for prospective international students in CEHD.
How is CEHD and your program helping you prepare for your career?
I really appreciate how approachable my advisor and professors are at the CEHD. I was pleasantly surprised by how open, understanding, and respectful they are with our time and how we express ourselves. They provide us with a safe space, a non-judgmental environment, and helpful resources and feedback on all our work and concerns. As a student-professional, this kind of learning support helps me build my confidence, increase my curiosity and independence in learning, and heighten my passion and joy in my field.
If you could give one piece of advice to a new international student, what would it be?
Finding your community can be tough when you're in a new place. Making genuine friendships takes effort, especially when everyone has their own schedule. Despite being busy with our responsibilities and tasks, it's important to seek out groups or organizations that align with our values and priorities. This can help us create meaningful memories and experiences with people and places, whether they're within or outside the state. I also highly recommend asking for help whenever you need it. There are generous and caring individuals within and outside the University who are willing to offer resources and support. We just have to put ourselves out there.
