    • CEHD admits transfer students directly into majors. 
    • Some majors will reach enrollment capacity by the priority deadline. To be sure your application is given full consideration, please submit all materials by the priority deadline. Majors which have not filled by the priority deadlines will continue to accept applications until Dec. 1 (spring admission) or June 1 (fall admission) or until the specified major fills.
    • Application review begins after the deadline. Applicants will be notified of their admission decision four to six weeks after the application deadline.

    Step #2: Complete undergraduate change of college or additional degree application

    The application form will ask you to identify whether you are applying to change your college or applying for a dual degree. CEHD applicants will be prompted to complete a Transfer Application Supplement comprised of short answer questions specific to your major of interest.

    If applying for a double-major with CEHD but remaining with your current college, please email cehdtrfr@umn.edu to initiate the application process. You will be sent the CEHD Application Supplement comprised of short answer questions specific to your double-major.

    Step #2: Refer to the Office of Admissions transfer application checklist and follow all steps

    • Review transfer application checklist.
    • Golden Gopher application + fee or request a fee waiver within the application.
    • Have official transcripts sent from every institution (including PSEO, CIS credits) to: UMTC Office of Admissions, 240 Williamson Hall, 231 Pillsbury Drive SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455-0213 or admissions@umn.edu.
    • Review the short answer essay prompts and instructions, prepare your responses, and then upload your responses on your application tracker.
    • Special education applicants only: Upload two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member who can speak to your academic potential).

      Application review factors

      CEHD admits transfer students into specific majors.  All students are considered for admission based on an individual review of their application using the academic and context review factors listed below, in addition to the criteria described in the application instructions for the program students are applying to. These criteria include the specific prerequisite course and credit requirements for the individual program. Before applying, all students must meet the minimum admission requirements. However, meeting minimum prerequisite course, credit levels, and GPA requirements does not guarantee admission to a major. A variety of selection criteria are used to determine admission, including but not limited to, overall GPA, number of credits completed, and success in key courses.

      Note: If you have not yet met the prerequisites for admission, you may still apply. It is sometimes possible to be admitted before meeting the requirements; however, your chances of admission significantly increase if you apply after meeting the prerequisites.

      Academic review factors

      • Grade point average—cumulative, and in specific courses related to the student's intended major.
      • An especially challenging pattern of coursework, especially in courses related to the student's intended major.

      Context review factors

      • Evidence of exceptional achievement, aptitude, or personal accomplishment not reflected in the academic record.
      • A pattern of steady improvement in academic performance.
      • Participation in extracurricular programs related to your intended major.
      • Non-academic experience in a field related to your intended major.
      • Evidence of exceptional talent or ability in artistic, scholarly, leadership, or athletic performance.
      • Evidence that enrollment would enhance the cultural, gender, age, economic, or geographic diversity of the student body.
        Outstanding high school, college, or community involvement.
      • Military service.
      • Work experience, paid or unpaid.
      • Evidence of having overcome social, economic, or physical barriers to educational achievement.
      • Extenuating circumstances.

      CEHD does not admit transfer students outside of specific majors. We advise students to stay at their current college and complete the admission requirements before applying to transfer.

      Note: The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) will meet the University's liberal education requirements, but not the writing intensive requirements. You are not required to complete the MN Transfer Curriculum in order to apply to the University of Minnesota. Consult with a counselor at your current institution with questions regarding the MnTC.

        What if I miss the priority application deadline?

        After the priority deadline, the website will list the majors that are still accepting applications. Any applications received after the final deadline of June 1 for fall consideration and the final deadline of December 1 for spring consideration will not be reviewed.

        When will I receive an admission decision?

        Applications received by the priority deadline:

        • Review of applications will begin shortly after the priority deadline.
        • You will receive an admission decision by email. For spring admission, you will be notified no later than mid-November; for fall admission, no later than mid-April.

        Application received after the priority deadline:

        • Applications are reviewed on a rolling, space-available basis. Please note that many majors will fill by the priority deadline.
        • You will receive an admission decision by email no later than one week after the final deadline.

        Any applications received after June 1 for fall consideration and December 1 for spring consideration will not be reviewed.

        Once admitted, you will receive detailed information on orientation and other steps required before you start your first semester. More information for admitted students.

        Can I appeal if I'm denied?

        If you are denied admission as an ICT student (applying from within the Twin Cities campus), you may submit an appeal. Ordinarily, students appeal an admission decision in order to bring to light compelling new academic information that was not previously included in their applications, or extenuating personal circumstances that they feel warrant another review of the application. Each appeal is reviewed individually and decisions are based on a very careful overall assessment of the primary and secondary review factors, the applicant’s academic interests, additional information provided in the appeal, and space in the major.

        What does it cost to attend the University of Minnesota and how do I apply for financial aid/scholarships?
        I work full time. May I be a part-time student?

        The University of Minnesota has a 13-credit minimum policy. New students should plan to progress through the program as a full-time student and will be expected to complete at least 13 credits each semester. If you have extenuating circumstances and would like to take fewer than 13 credits you can fill out an exemption form with your academic advisor.

        May I take classes online?

        Most of the courses you're going to take will be specific to your major, and those courses are not generally offered online. You may have some options for taking a course or two online, but the vast majority will be taught in a traditional classroom setting, on campus.

        How long will it take for me to graduate after transferring?
        • This depends on a number of factors, and is difficult to determine before admission and before all of your transfer work has been reviewed for transferability.
        • Use the University Catalog for your intended major to help with longer term planning prior to admission. There you can find a list of all of the required courses for that program, along with links to course descriptions that include information about prerequisites for each course and frequency of offerings. Formal graduation planning occurs between you and your CEHD advisor only after you've been officially admitted to your major.
